LOCAL Wings of Hope Cancer Support Center: Wings of Hope Cancer Support Center is a nonprofit organization in Council Bluffs, offering support groups and wellness classes to cancer survivors and caregivers both in-person and virtually.

LOCAL Project Pink’d: From the moment of diagnosis through end of life, Project Pink’d, Inc. provides tools, resources and a strong network to strengthen and renew the mind, body and spirit of breast cancer survivors in Nebraska and Western Iowa.

LOCAL My Sister’s Keeper Nebraska : My Sister’s Keeper is the first and only support group for women of color who have been diagnosed with breast cancer based in Omaha Nebraska. My Sister’s Keeper provides support, advocacy and education regarding breast cancer as it relates to women of color. My Sister’s Keeper provides as safe environment where women of color can share their survival stories, learn about their treatment options, and find allies in their battle against breast cancer.

LOCAL Harper’s Hope (Nebraska Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center): Harper’s Hope can offer you and your family the support services needed to overcome any obstacles that may accompany your cancer diagnosis. Our team places an increasing emphasis on finding the most effective ways for treating the whole person, including your mind, body, and spirit. Cancer support groups include: Breast Cancer Support Group, LLS Omaha Community Support Group, Prostate Cancer Support Group, SPOHNC (Support for People with Oral, Head and Neck Cancer) Support Group, Young Adult Survivor’s Network, Colorectal Cancer Support Group and Sarcoma and GIST Support Group.

LOCAL Support Groups (Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center). At Nebraska Medicine, we understand that many of our patients are in extremely challenging circumstances. Taking time to process your experiences with others can be a healthy part of your own healing journey.

LOCAL Cancer Support and Recovery | Lincoln, NE | Bryan Health: Cancer support groups at Bryan Medical Center in Loncoln offer a safe place where those diagnosed with cancer and their loved ones can find support, inspiration and information in their fight against cancer. General Cancer Support Group, Ostomy Support Group, Prostate Cancer Support Group, Thyroid Cancer Support Group.

love|blackbird (loveblackbird.com): A blog run by three young adult survivors, including ATTH alumna Becky Gehringer, of rare and aggressive cancers, who are learning to thrive and are passionate about supporting others. The blog contains articles about cancer, life, love, hardship, and triumphs, aimed at cancer survivors and their loved ones.

Seed, Stem, Bloom: Lessons From My Faith-led Journey Through CANcer: In 2014, Mary Robinson was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. A relapse in 2017 determined that an allogeneic stem cell transplant was the only option for long-term survival. This book tracks Mary’s story through that long journey, but it is not a book about cancer. The core of this book, with its intention to share the experiences of a particularly difficult season in Mary’s life, is all about following God’s signs.

Cancer Support Community: As the largest professionally led nonprofit network of cancer support worldwide, the Cancer Support Community is dedicated to ensuring that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.

Financial Assistance/Temporary Housing/Transportation

LOCAL Hope Lodge Nebraska | American Cancer Society: The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Omaha offers 32 guest rooms located near treatment centers in the area. It offers free accommodation for patients in cancer treatment and their caregivers, fully equipped community kitchens for food storage and preparation, gathering areas/great rooms and community dining rooms, and free laundry rooms stocked with supplies. Admission and eligibility can be found on their website.

LOCAL Heartland Cancer Foundation – Home: The Heartland Cancer Foundation’s mission is to provide practical and immediate financial assistance to eligible cancer patients in our community so they can focus on what matters most: healing. They assist cancer patients and their families by covering home, auto, and utility costs for local cancer patients in need of additional support during their treatment journey. The Heartland Cancer Foundation’s scope is limited to certain counties in Nebraska. Check their website to see if you qualify.

LOCAL All Betty’s Children (allbettyschildren.org). All Betty’s Children in Tecumseh, NE provides care, comfort, and support through emotional, financial, and other means to families confronting cancer during their time of need. You can nominate a family at their website.

LOCAL Home | Helping Hands (Grace Cancer Foundation): GRACE Cancer Foundation assists cancer patients who live within 40 miles of Grand Island, Nebraska, or are being treated at the Saint Francis Cancer Treatment Center in Grand Island, or the Mary Lanning Healthcare – Morrison Cancer Center in Hastings. Help is available through several methods, such as gas cards, assistance with medical bills, household expenses, and more.

LOCAL Scare Away Cancer Omaha, Nebraska. For eleven years Scare Away Cancer has offered support to cancer patients and their families by giving financial assistance. One of the most impactful ways we support our families is through direct financial gifts.  Families facing cancer often struggle with stretching their budgets to cover everything – how to put food on the table, how to ensure they have access to reliable transportation, and keeping up with their daily bills. See applications guidelines and apply for a gift on their website.

LOCAL STAC | Students Together Against Cancer (teamstac.org): It is the mission of Students Together Against Cancer at UNO and UNL to provide emotional and financial assistance to local cancer patients, to provide students with practical opportunities to develop skills in their areas of interest and to assist other cancer-related organizations and initiatives.

LOCAL Carolyn Scott Rainbow House – Children’s Hospital & Medical Center (childrensomaha.org). The Carolyn Scott Rainbow House located at 7825 Farnam Drive in Omaha is a 56-room guest house for out-of-town families who are coming to Children’s Hospital & Medical Center from more than 60 miles outside of Omaha.

LOCAL Ronald McDonald House Charities (rmhcomaha.org). At Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha, we know that oftentimes, it’s the little things that provide the most comfort. A hot cup of coffee in the morning. The smell of clean laundry. The feeling of a fresh haircut. Just like you, our families appreciate those little things in our House, as well as crawling into a warm bed after a long day in the hospital room. The taste of a home-cooked meal, even while far from home. A calming voice saying, “it’ll be okay.” When families travel to Omaha for their child’s medical care, they need those little things to get through it. They find them at Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha.

LOCAL Wear Yellow Nebraska. As a cancer survivor, co-founder and past president Mike Buckley had the idea to start funding cab rides for cancer patients in Omaha who were without access to transportation, a need he discovered during his own treatment journey. Access to rides to and from treatment are essential because patients are in a weakened state and often times left unable to drive themselves, which also leaves them vulnerable to lapses in vital medical care. Even if patients do have family and friends who can help, they aren’t always available.

LOCAL Nebraska Short Term Disability. Short-Term Disability (STD) provides a tax-free payout of up to 60% of your weekly paycheck as of the 1st day of injury or the 8th day of a sickness if you experience a qualifying disability and are unable to perform your job duties. This can continue for up to a Maximum of 26 weeks.

LOCAL Nebraska Homeowner Assistance Fund (NHAF). If you have experienced a COVID-19 related financial hardship that began or continued after January 21, 2020, the Nebraska Homeowners Assistance Fund (NHAF) may be able to help you stay in your home and get back on track. The NHAF program is designed to assist homeowners with past due payments for their mortgage, utilities/internet, property taxes, insurance and/or homeowners’ association dues. The Program can also assist with future mortgage payments as well as clearing liens from a homeowner’s property.

REGIONAL (Iowa) The Above + Beyond Cancer Hotel Program is a cooperative effort between Above + Beyond Cancer and participating hotels to provide overnight accommodations to cancer patients who travel for outpatient treatment, and cannot afford a place to stay. Hotels provide complimentary rooms on a space-available basis.

Road To Recovery (cancer.org). Everyday thousands of cancer patients need a ride to treatment, but some may not have a way to get there. The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program provides transportation to and from treatment for people with cancer who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves.

Air Care Alliance helps patients find the right charitable aviation organization to meet their needs and connects them directly to service. Free flights are provided by qualified charitable aviation organizations through volunteer pilots flying private aircraft, or through commercial airline partners.

Air Charity Network provides access for people in need seeking free air transportation to specialized health care facilities or distant destinations due to family, community or national crisis.

Corporate Angel Network Cancer patients fly free to treatment on empty seats of corporate jets.

Angel Flights: Organizations of pilots and other volunteers serving the community with free private air transportation for the medically and financially needy. Each organization serves different parts of the country

Susan Lang Pay-It-Forward Patient Travel Assistance Program | Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (lls.org). The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Susan Lang Pay-It-Forward Patient Travel Assistance program is available to blood cancer patients, with significant financial need. Those who qualify will receive $500 to cover the cost of treatment-related travel and lodging expenses for the patient and caregiver including: ground transportation; tolls; gas; parking; car rental; car maintenance, repairs and parts; air transportation; baggage fees; lodging; and ambulance services.

Insurance – Employment – Finances | Triage Cancer: Triage Cancer is a national, nonprofit organization that provides free education on the legal and practical issues that may impact individuals diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers, through events, materials, and resources.

Allyson Whitney Foundation Grants | (allysonwhitney.org): The heart of our organization is to assist as many young adults – an underserved demographic – as we can, through ‘Life Interrupted Grants’. Ally’s pursuit was to give others hope and make them feel recognized. The grants lend a supportive hand and shine a light during a dark time. Our wish is that our recipients hear the words “no evidence of disease” from their doctors and continue on their path of life.

Cerner Charitable Foundation: Sometimes, financial constraints make it impossible for parents and caregivers to cover their child’s medical expenses. Cerner Charitable Foundation accepts individual medical grant applications for medical needs from the United States and through select international providers. Can assist with travel/lodging, therapies/meds (that are FDA approved), etc.  Will need to submit proof of income and cannot make more than $50,000/year.  Family will be allowed a max of 3 grants in their lifetime (and 12 months apart). Travel costs are up to $750.

Resources for People with Cancer | Helping Hand | CancerCare (cancerfac.org) The Cancer Financial Assistance Coalition is a coalition of financial assistance organizations joining forces to help cancer patients experience better health and well-being by limiting financial challenges, through facilitating communication and collaboration among member organizations, educating patients and providers about existing resources and linking to other organizations that can disseminate information about the collective resources of the member organizations.

Managing the Costs of Cancer Treatment – Here are some tips on what costs you might be able to expect and some ideas on how to plan for, ask about, and discuss treatment costs with your cancer care team.

When health insurance is not enough – HealthWell Foundation. The HealthWell Foundationis a leading non-profit dedicated to improving access to care for America’s underinsured. When health insurance is not enough, we fill the gap by assisting with copays, premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses.

Family Reach | Financial support for families facing cancer. Family Reach is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to removing the financial barriers standing between a cancer patient and their treatment. Loss of income, out-of-pocket expenses, and socioeconomic factors create disparities in the financial burdens families face. Family Reach delivers financial education, financial coaching, resource navigation, and emergency relief funds to patients and caregivers facing a cancer diagnosis so no family has to choose between their health and their home.

Get Help | the samfund. The SamFund is a non-profit organization that provides grants, financial education, and resources to young adult cancer survivors.

Joe’s House – A Lodging Guide for Cancer Patients: Joe’s House is not an actual house, but a nonprofit organization that helps cancer patients and their families find a place to stay when traveling away from home for medical treatment. They list cancer treatment centers and hospitals across the country with nearby lodging facilities that offer a discount.

The Healthcare Hospitality Network, Inc. (HHN) is a nationwide professional association of nearly 200 unique, nonprofit organizations that provide lodging and support services to patients, families and their loved ones who are receiving medical treatment far from their home communities.

VIDEO How to File for Unemployment Benefits | Cancer Support Community: If you were let go by your employer or had your hours reduced at your job, you can file for unemployment benefits to make up for some of your lost income. Unemployment insurance is a state-run program. States further define their specific eligibility requirements.

VIDEO Applying for Disability Benefits | Cancer Support Community: When facing cancer, you may consider applying for disability benefits. These are payments available to people who can’t work because of their disability. This includes certain medical conditions like some types of cancer. You must meet specific criteria and provide documentation to qualify for disability insurance. The amount you receive in benefits depends on your past income.

VIDEO I Can’t Afford to Have Cancer – Jim Murphy and Shasta Wragge.
Cancer is expensive. And nearly all cancer survivors experience financial stress due to the cost of cancer treatment and related expenses. Have your out-of-pocket treatment costs shattered your credit? Are you struggling with medical bills and need to explore alternative lines of credit? This session will explore financial topics that are important to cancer survivors and their caregivers. View this for financial guidance as we meet with banking experts for a highly informative and open discussion.

Cleaning for a Reason: Cleaning for a Reason is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that offers free home cleaning to cancer patients in the United States and Canada. Our goal is to remove the burden of cleaning and allow those recovering from surgery, in active treatment, or in hospice to focus on their health and spending valuable time with loved ones.

LOCAL Angels Among Us: Angels Among Us started as a grassroots organization and has grown to one that supports nearly all of the pediatric cancer kids treated in Nebraska. Currently, they provide financial support to families of children with cancer being treated at Nebraska hospitals (even if these families reside in other states) as well as Nebraska residents receiving treatments out of state.

Exercise and Meditation

Benefits of Meditation for People Over 50: This article cites important research on how regular meditation can improve brain capacity and function at a time when it normally is declining.

LOCAL Casting for Recovery: Casting for Recovery (CfR) provides healing outdoor retreats for women with breast cancer, at no cost to the participants. CfR’s retreats offer opportunities for women to find inspiration, discover renewed energy for life, and experience healing connections with other women and nature. The retreats are open to women with breast cancer of all ages, in all stages of treatment and recovery.

LOCAL Harper’s Hope (bestcare.org): Harper’s Hope can offer you and your family the support services needed to overcome any obstacles that may accompany your cancer diagnosis. Our team places an increasing emphasis on finding the most effective ways for treating the whole person, including your mind, body, and spirit. In person and virtual physical wellness classes are offered.

LOCAL/NATIONAL LIVESTRONG at the YMCA | YMCA of Greater Omaha (metroymca.org): LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA is a research-based physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors reclaim their total health. This 12 week program is offered at no cost to any adult cancer survivor, and also includes a complimentary household membership to the YMCA for the duration of the program.

Moving Through Cancer: A guide to getting and staying active during cancer treatment. Being physically active can be challenging after a cancer diagnosis. But research clearly shows that most people who are more active during treatment have fewer side effects, faster recovery from treatment, and less risk of cancer returning (in some cases). This booklet will explain the why, what, how, and when of physical activity during and after your cancer treatment.

VIDEO/AUDIO Resilience Rehabilitation: Join Dr. Tracy Bender, an Occupational Therapist who specializes in cancer rehab, lymphedema, women’s health, and health coaching. As Dr. Bender says, the mind/body/soul connection is imperative to complete healing but is often not included as a part of rehabilitation. Use this tool for 30 consecutive days to allow your mind to develop new habits of positive thinking and energy shifts in order to achieve complete healing.

LOCAL/NATIONAL Ronald McDonald House Charities (rmhcomaha.org). At Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha, we know that oftentimes, it’s the little things that provide the most comfort. A hot cup of coffee in the morning. The smell of clean laundry. The feeling of a fresh haircut. Just like you, our families appreciate those little things in our House, as well as crawling into a warm bed after a long day in the hospital room. The taste of a home-cooked meal, even while far from home. A calming voice saying, “it’ll be okay.” When families travel to Omaha for their child’s medical care, they need those little things to get through it. Coping For Kids – Books, Coping With Cancer: Pam Ganz, MS, is a trained child life specialist and pediatric oncology counselor who has developed a support program for children whose family member is living with a life-threatening illness for Mourning Hope, a grief center in Lincoln, Nebraska. She has written several books, including “Life Isn’t Always a Day at the Beach” for children of all ages whose lives are affected by cancer. Cerner Charitable Foundation: Sometimes, financial constraints make it impossible for parents and caregivers to cover their child’s medical expenses. Cerner Charitable Foundation accepts individual medical grant applications for medical needs from the United States and through select international providers. Can assist with travel/lodging, therapies/meds (that are FDA approved), etc.  Will need to submit proof of income and cannot make more than $50,000/year.  Family will be allowed a max of 3 grants in their lifetime (and 12 months apart). Travel costs are up to $750.

NATIONAL Livestrong Fertility: Livestrong Fertility is dedicated to providing reproductive information, resources and financial support to survivors whose cancer and its treatment present risks to their fertility. NATIONAL Walgreens Fertility Preservation: Cancer treatments may affect the ability of both men and women to have children. Ferring Pharmaceuticals offers a variety of programs and options including free SELECT medications for patients undergoing cancer treatment through their Heart Beat program. VIDEO How to File for Unemployment Benefits | Cancer Support Community: If you were let go by your employer or had your hours reduced at your job, you can file for unemployment benefits to make up for some of your lost income. Unemployment insurance is a state-run program. States further define their specific eligibility requirements.

These are payments available to people who can’t work because of their disability. This includes certain medical conditions like some types of cancer. LOCAL Choice Food Distribution – Heart Ministry Center. Thousands of families in the Omaha metro don’t have access to the meals they need. At our choice food distribution, community members can choose from a variety of bread, meat, produce, and canned or boxed items. Clients are able to use the pantry once every 30 days*. Does have culturally sensitive food available.  Participants are able to drive up once a month or every 2 weeks. They also have a laundromat.  Laundromat is digital so you can monitor the loads via your phone.

LOCAL Heartland Hope Mission | More Than a Pantry. Heartland Hope Mission helps working poor families by providing them with some of life’s most basic staples including: a week’s supply of food, clothing, hygiene items, SNAP assistance, community referrals, and job resources. Heartland Hope Mission is a faith-based organization that also offers Bible studies and prayer.

LOCAL Serving the greater Sarpy County community | Tri-City Food Pantry (tricitypantry.org). The Tri-City Food Pantry serves the people who live in the greater Sarpy County area. Many people believe that the problems associated with hunger are confined to small pockets of society or certain neighborhoods but the reality is much different.  Right now, many people right here in our community are struggling with hunger.  They may have recently lost a job or are disabled and unable to work.  They are often hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet.

LOCAL Food Pantry – Washington County Food Pantry (josephscoat.org). The Washington County Food Panty exists to end hunger, and to inspire hope in our community. LOCAL OneWorld Omaha (oneworldomaha.org): OneWorld believes that everyone deserves access to the best health care possible, regardless of economic or insurance status. To that end, we provide a vast range of services in health care, dentistry and behavioral health. Coping with Cancer as an LGBTQ+ Person: Sexual orientation and gender identity can have a significant impact on the well-being of those with cancer. Discrimination and systemic barriers to care for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer or Questioning, Intersex or Asexual (LGBTQIA+) individuals can add to the stress of coping with a cancer diagnosis. There are ways to advocate for yourself and find the care you need and deserve.

The LGBT Cancer Project – Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Cancer Survivor Support and Advocacy. The National LGBT Cancer Project is our country’s first Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender cancer survivor support and advocacy nonprofit organization. Our online support group community, Out With Cancer, is committed to improving the health of LGBT cancer survivors with peer to peer support, patient navigation, education and advocacy.

National LGBT Cancer Network (cancer-network.org). The National LGBT Cancer Network works to improve the lives of LGBT cancer survivors and those at risk by: EDUCATING the LGBT community about our increased cancer risks and the importance of screening and early detection; TRAINING health care providers to offer more culturally-competent, safe and welcoming care; and ADVOCATING for LGBT survivors in mainstream cancer organizations, the media and research.
